Unusual Benefits of Singing Lessons

wrexhamsinternatio

If you are sick and tired of another list of bog-standard reasons to start singing lessons for yourself or your child, this is the post for you. These are benefits that are not on any of those "Top 5 Reasons to Take Up Singing" lists, but reasons and benefits that I know to be true for my students in my own singing lessons studio based in Wrexham, North Wales.

So here they are, the benefits:

1) An Outside Opinion Goes a Long Way

Especially for young people, having an outside opinion from a person who isn't their parent is immensely valuable. (“You have to be nice; you are my mum!”) An external person who will praise students when they are doing well and who will be kind but honest can create confidence and foster more trust in the students' own abilities, allowing them to view their skills more objectively.

2) Moving on from Past Criticism

I have had students who share horror stories about past teachers who told them they shouldn’t bother because they were terrible or had no creative bone in their bodies. First of all, music is highly subjective. What one person likes, another might not, and vice versa. Secondly, you are going to lessons to learn. It is unreasonable to expect people to be perfect if they have not had lessons and have not been properly supported. Having a trusted teacher who is kind and honest can help you move on from the belief that you are awful and have no hope of learning!

3) Career Guidance

Some of my best singing teachers were the ones who were interested in ways I could expand my musicality through my career. They encouraged me to send music to music managers at Sony, advised me on the order of my set lists for gigs, asked what songs I had written or recorded recently, and reminded me to sign up for PRS for royalties. All of these things actively grew my career and my interest in the music industry. This may not be something everyone is interested in, but for those who want a career in music, picking a teacher who knows about the industry is extremely helpful and encouraging.

4) Improved Public Speaking

Knowing how to use your voice while singing translates into speaking in public. You learn how to project safely, create more inflection in your voice, and pace your speech to be charismatic and interesting to listen to. All of these skills can be developed through singing.

Then you have all the obvious benefits: more joy, having fun, and improving breath control, etc. They all stand, but here are some that are unusual!

I hope that was interesting and helpful!

Keep Creating!
